Hi guys! I have about 14 more days to make this decision, so I'd really appreciate some input on this subject matter. Below, I'll list some pros/cons and details about each of these schools. PLEASE share whatever advice/opinion you may have!
UCLA Design Media Arts:
This is my DREAM SCHOOL. I've been a slacker all of my life, but I pulled my **** together in JULY to put together an entire art portfolio for college, and my Cali dream has been the driving force through all of this. It's heartbreaking to imagine not going there, especially after my acceptance, but they only gave me $2k (I'm OOS), so it would cost about 58k a year to attend for me. My parents have said that they'd shoulder $30k for me wherever I choose, so I'd be 120k in debt upon graduation from UCLA.
CMU Fine Art:
Well.. this isn't really what I want to do, and CMU seems too rigorous and competitive for me. I was rejected from their design major. HOWEVER, they are giving me 38k a year in aid, which cuts down the cost to around 26k a year. no debt for me, but WRONG MAJOR, AND DEPRESSING ENVIRONMENT. fantastic reputation though. but.. I hate the rain.
RISD Graphic Design:
They gave me about 17k a year, so it would cost give or take $30k a year for me. I'm unsure of the exact numbers but I would be debt free upon graduation. I honestly don't know much about the school or the program, but I have concerns about the limitations of going to an art school. Please enlighten me and inform me on the pros and cons of their program!!! I'd really appreciate any input.
NYU Steinhardt:
I really have no opinion here. I received a $30k Steinhardt Scholarship, and then another $10k in some sort of portfolio award? unsure. the cost would go down from 70k to 30k a year. I don't know much about the program but it isn't very talked about, so I assume there's nothing special about it? Neutral feelings about living in NYC, I'd prefer it over pittsburgh (CMU) though. It just feels like a waste to not take the scholarship.
My eventual hopes are to go in the communications direction! Would love to somehow go into advertising because I love language, I love breaking down the thought processes of human beings, and I love art! Some other schools I was accepted into include USC, Pratt, SVA, Scad, CalPoly, UC Davis, SMFA, but I'm not really considering any of those.

Columbia College Chicago vs. Syracuse for film (BFA)
Hey guys
I'm an international student and currently looking for a transfer
and I've done research on film schools for more than a half year
However, based on my poor as hell GPA on my last year college,
I think I pretty much lose my chances to pursue some of the top schools
(My high school GPA is okay which is 3.3, my freshmen year is also fine,
but since I'd put all my passion on learning filming skills by my own, my overall 2 years college GPA would be like 2.0)
So back to the topic,
I've just being accepted by CCC, and I actually love this school a lot that I've been to their open house and so far so good
but since Syracuse still receiving applications and I know they also have a nice film program
so it makes me feel hard to decide whether should I apply Syracuse as well?
I feel CCC has put a lot of resources on their film program, but I'm not sure about Syracuse?
Study abroad is a big thing for me, so I don't want to go to the school only for its big name
I want my tuition can be paid off, please give me some comments and advice, thanks!
(Btw, here is my portfolio for CCC, if anyone wants to take a look, please do.)

Industrial design summer workshop/ camp
Hi!
I had previously posted this over in the Summer experiences forum, and am reposting here..
My daughter (a junior) is very interested in Industrial/ Product design....the problem is, she hasn't had any real exposure to it...Would the 1-week summer camps offered by schools such as University of Cincinnati, Auburn, SCAD be useful to help her decide? Or are they more of a fun, summer camp experience? Also, any preferences for one over the other?
.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Looming shortage of VFX artists...?
Here is an article saying that there is a looming shortage of vfx artists. Frankly, I don't believe it. So many jobs are going overseas (China and India). Or, are they going overseas because of a shortage here? Are vfx-heavy films a current fad that will go away or will vfx become so good that they could produce what look like live-action movies with ALL vfx?

SVA vs Parsons Graphic Design
Hello everyone
I am an international student. I applied to transfer to 5 RISD, SVA, Parsons, SCAD and SAIC. I have been accepted to the other 4 and waiting for RISD ( I think they'll send decisions next week or the May 1st week, but I'm not confident for RISD)
I'm ruling out SAIC (too little aid) and SCAD (though they give me 15.5k but comparing to RISD, SVA and Parsons I though I'd rather pay a little bit more.)
I'm stuck in decision between Parsons and SVA now for graphic design/communication design and it would really help if you guys have any insights about the program in both schools.
Thank you so so much!

Undergraduate Film production NYU Tisch vs. LMU SFTV
Hello!
I was accepted to both Undergraduate Production programs at the LMU School of Film and Television and NYU Tisch.
I’m from Germany and for me it is really hard to actually get a feeling for both universities, here oversee, and I can only rely on their homepages and different online-forums.
I have a few questions about these two universities, i really hope you can help me!
1. I heard a lot about the great community and social life at LMU. I only read about NYU that it does not have a „real“ campus, so it seems that the social life is much better at LMU. I know, there can’t be an objective answer, but maybe you can give me an estimate.
2. From what I have read, LMU seems much more personal and more caring about the individual students. Is this the case? Are professors more caring and more supportive at LMU?
3. NYU seems for me like a very elitist University. How do students get along which each other? Is it really competitive (in a bad way) or do students get along each other well and like to see flourish each others and collaborate?
4. I have checked the rankings on the Hollywood Reporter and other ranking sites. NYU is the better university for film production. But how important is it to actually BE in Los Angeles? Since most of the film industry is based on the West Coast, it seems that it is harder to succeed on the East Coast, even though I attend the „better“ university. But on the other hand: each year there are far more film students graduating in LA than in NY.
5. I have seen different student films of both NYU and LMU. Many of the LMU films do not look like I would expect an Thesis film to look like. I don’t want to sound cocky, but from my own experiences I could make some of the films on my own without any University education. Maybe you can tell me about (your) film projects and LMU and NYU and the degree of professionalism.
6. Maybe someone can tell me about their internship programs. It seems as if LMU focuses very strongly on internships, but NYU offers the opportunity for internships, as well.
I hope somebody can answer some of my questions. I know, in the end it depends on me what I get out of my education and how I will flourish career-wise.
Thank you very much in advance! Every answer is really appreciated!

Animation programs: it is time to make a decision
Looking for guidance from the experts here on cc. Would love it if @taxguy and @gouf78 and @colcon2010 would chime in. I have learned lots from your previous posts.
DS has been accepted to many traditional universities as an animation major and wanted help sorting out the programs or finding out anything that anyone knows about these programs. As for background, DS did precollege at Otis in animation and loved it! Also has taken classes at Art Center in figure drawing, char design, environment design and at RPI in video game design (less applicable). Looking most into the quality of the art education, connections, final job placement. Cost is less of an issue. Lastly, if he loves animation and continues on, is it possible to transfer to an arts college (prefers 2D)? Current dream jobs include animation, character design, video game art, concept art. We live in Los Angeles.
Accepted to:
College / 4 or 5 year cost (Cal states take 5 years)
San Jose State University 125K
Loyola Marymount University 217K
Chapman 160K
RIT 132K
Syracuse 192K
DePaul 132K
Champlain awaiting merit award
Cal State Univ Long Beach 115K
Cal State Univ Northridge 115K
Cal State Univ Fullerton 125K
UC San Diego (not a real animation major; major is called ICAM: Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts) 128K
UC Santa Cruz (definitely not animation; major is CS computer game design) 138K
Have visited
LMU
Chapman
DePaul
UCSC
Was going to cram in a bunch of visits during each weekend in April, but unfortunately he cannot go due to a major EC commitment each weekend that he cannot get out of :(
Thoughts? Advice?

Here to answer questions - SAIC, LCAD, CCA, CalArts, ArtCenter, CMU, MICA
I was just thinking that if there are any rising seniors thinking about applying to art school/art programs, I could help them out. I personally found the process to be a bit daunting, not knowing what kind of portfolio each school wanted. I applied to way too many schools, and I wish I had someone giving me more advice on which schools I should've applied to/how to work on my portfolio/the general application process.
I got into SAIC, Laguna College of Art and Design, California College of the Arts, CalArts, ArtCenter, Carnegie Mellon University, and MICA, and I was fortunate enough to receive merit aid from nearly all of these schools.
So if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask! I feel that a lot of the threads in this forum are outdated and could use a fresher perspective.

Dealing with disapproval
What do I say to the people who don't want D to go to an art school? Who say that it would be a waste of her brain, that she belongs in an LAC, that it will give her only technical skills and not conceptual skills? blah, blah blah, blah.
I'm starting to get a lot of heat about this and so far, it's NOT from any family members.
Why does this remind me of being pregnant and getting so much unwanted advice and having to hear everyone's horror story?
I've toyed with the idea of saying, "well, we wanted her to get a philosophy degree, but then there are so many cabbies already". Just sounds too mean, and I'd rather hit the nail on the head than shoot a whole new nail.....

US Performing Arts Summer Programs?
Hi! As some of you might know Im really looking for a really rigorous summer program specifically for acting on film especially meisner but it really can't be too long or too expensive! So far I'm not having any luck and most application dates are closing so any info ASAP would be so incredibly helpful!! I'm 16 and a rising junior and it would need to provide board.
I stumbled across a site called US Performing Arts that hosts summer camps at different venues. I've never heard of them! Are they actually quality? Apparently last year they hosted an acting for film program at UCLA but this year its at Relativity Studios (but not run by them I guess?? But that school also has its own summer camps I'm also curious about!) Its one of the only programs that actually has a program about acting for film. ANY info would be so great thank you so much for reading!!
Here's the link:

It's only five days long though so if you know of any really good acting for film programs please let me know thank you!
Here are two more programs I saw but haven't heard any reviews from so I don't know about:

Major Decisions
So I'm currently a junior in high school, and I know I don't have to be set on what I wish to pursue yet, but it's something I've been thinking about a lot. I'm really starting to think I would like to pursue a film degree and be in that industry, but my parents think I should do something more practical like marketing. I know I need some creative drive in whatever I pursue or else I just won't be able to do it.
I know this isn't something that you can tell somebody to go either way, but does anyone have some advice or personal experience they could share? If you do, thanks!

Advice appreciated for my sophomore "wanna be" animator
hello all! I got some great advice on another thread in the parents forum over the summer, but it was suggested I post here for specific questions. I would love some help in a timeline of "what to do". A little history for those of you who didn't read the other thread. I have 2 in college already, went a very academic route. Both did very well. D3, is very talented artistically and musically. She loves to draw, draws every day, has a digital art program, but not an animation program, mainly because I'm ignorant on what to get her. Hoping she'll go to a camp this summer for some experience. I have 2 in college, so price is an issue on that. I've found nothing at local art colleges that offer a camp for this. She's in art 2 at school, she was chosen "artist of the 1st semester" and has her art on display at school, so that's cool. She's taking art classes, and learning oil painting and figures right now... Something she's never done. I know we are going to have to visit lot more schools than I did with my older 2. She's going to a portfolio day with a senior friend next month for the experience. What else should I be doing?

SVA vs Pratt BFA, fine arts major
Hi,
I'm an international student coming to study art in NY next year.
I got accepted to SVA and Pratt and urgently need to decide which one of them I will be attending, but I'm having a hard time to make the choice.
among my considerations is the fact that I am 24 and a transfer student (I have about 30 credits from humanities study in a university here but no studio credits) and have experience working with some art groups. I got the feeling Pratt has a better reputation but I'm afraid I'll feel trapped and isolated in the campus, being outside of Manhattan, especially if the population there is mainly 18 y/o kids (who might be smart, creative and fascinating people but the age/experience factor still makes a difference). Whereas SVA's population sounded more diverse to me and its scattered campus (which I had not seen) made me associate it with a greater sense of 'freedom'.
Also I keep hearing this artsy/commercial thing and I don't really get what it means.
I want to attend a good school with good professors, facilities and curriculum, one that will allow experimentation but will also give me practical and business oriented skills-
But mainly I want to be inspired, an adventure.
Any thoughts on which one of the schools I should attend?
P.s
Oh, Pratt also granted me a scholarship that covers half of the tuition

University of Michigan - Stamps school of Art and Design
Has anyone looked into the Stamps art and design school at University of Michigan? My daughter just received their catalog and it really caught our interest. I wish they had sent it earlier. I like the flexibility they offer to mix it up with other majors. She is currently interested in film and we have discussed industrial design in the past as well. She is a creative type and also likes science, but is stronger on the creative side so she is looking for something that can combine both.
The stories in the catalog sound a lot like what she is looking for. It is a little late in the game to be visiting but I thought maybe we can get some information from someone who is familiar with the school or has visited to see if maybe we should take a look.

Non-traditional applicant to Cooper Union
I will be applying this fall as a transfer, although I will be considered a 4 year student, as I have a non-art BA. Curious about anyone's experience as older student in the BFA program. Admissions told me they take people "from all walks of life"- any truth to that? I work in the medical field and my art centers around creating mixed media with organic matter, and digital microscopy. Appreciate any feedback.
↧
Art programs for a non-art BA graduate?
Here's the scoop! I graduated fairly recently from a small liberal arts school with a BA in geology and have strong interests in pursuing a career in illustration. My initial plan was to dedicate my free time to refining a portfolio while working and eventually applying to an MFA program. However, as I look at different curricula, I feel I could gain a lot from foundations and techniques taught in BFA programs. Really, I'm lost and I'm not sure what is going to be the most advantageous (and economical) route. Anyone else taken this kind of non-traditional path into illustration? Any advice?
Going off of that, I have also recently applied to the Pratt AOS program in Illustration. I talked with the Dept. Chair who was incredibly accessible and I really liked the program set up.....but that's all the information I could really find on it. If anyone knows more about this program/its quality/associate degrees in Illustration/anything I would really appreciate it. It's Pratt, but the mystery of this program is making me incredibly nervous.

I don't know what my focus will be in college
So graduation is at the end of this month, and I'm kind of freaking out. I applied to a local community college and plan on studying their for two years, then possibly transferring elsewhere. When filling out my application, I did not know what kind of major I planned on acquiring, nor what future career I wanted to pursue. In the end I decided to enter college in the hopes of completing a "General Studies" program. This was in October of 2015.
In the past couple of months I've reignited my passion for art, and now all of a sudden I want to pursue a career in Graphic Design. I want to merge my art skills with entrepreneurship, though my future still seems a bit cloudy. I talked to my mom and she suggested going to school to major in graphic design. Then if I later decide to pursue a job in business that relates to Graphic Design, that I could go back and take a couple business classes. What should I do?

My son is interested in communication art/design. illustration or graphics design. People always mention RISD, Pratt, ..etc. These are very good schools and are pretty hard to get in.
